Destruction in Syria

It is indeed terrible news

“Dear Colleagues,

Umayyad minaret in Aleppo: bbc image

I am heartbroken to inform you that the 11th-century minaret of the Umayyad mosque in Aleppo was destroyed yesterday.  It was one of the great treasures of Islamic architecture, a restrained and elegant example of the exquisite stone-carving of medieval Syrian stonemasons.  It was of immense historical and architectural significance, and was greatly beloved by the people of Syria.

This follows on the heels of the destruction of another important early Islamic minaret, that of the Omari Mosque in Daraa, birthplace of the Syrian uprising, last week.  Parts of the mosque date to the 7th century and it is believed to have been built by ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab.

My thoughts are with the Syrian people.”

And so are mine.
