The Rouhani-supporting newspaper Mardom-e Emrouz featured a photo of actor George Clooney alongside Clooney’s message of support for Charlie Hebdo and its staff – and was then shut down following the outraged demands of many more conservative media outlets in Iran.
As Iranwire reported: “The closure also points to a wider problem: Rouhani’s failure to expand freedom of the press in Iran more generally… The battle over free expression has just begun in Iran, with Rouhani and his administration pitted against hardliners, who are deeply entrenched in both parliament and the judiciary. The closure of Mardom-e Emrouz is a reminder of how bitter the fight will be, and illustrates how much power hardliners command”.
Here’s another cartoon, above, by Touka Neyestani, about What Happens if you are Charlie in Iran. And one, left, by Mana Neyestani, on Our Very Own ISIS; as well as the image from Mardom-e Emrouz.
