Imprisoned for watching volleyball

Goncheh Ghavami went to watch a men’s volleyball match in the Azadi (freedom) stadium – and was arrested. Since June 2014 she has been in solitary confinement in the Evin prison in Tehran

Goncheh has dual British-Iranian citizenship. Amnesty International has called for an Urgent Action for her. Amnesty believes Ghoncheh has been put under psychological pressure and been told she “would not walk out of prison alive.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has said that its diplomatic powers are limited in Iran – but the UK Government does have the power to do more to help. Past cases have shown that when more pressure is applied the Government will take more action.
